PAL Steel Drum Band

Grades 6 & Up
Nueva School Location Monday 4:30-5:30

The steel drum was created on the island of Trinidad in the early 1940s. To this day, the instrument is still crafted by hand from a 55-gallon oil barrel. The steel drum band comprises four instrument types, similar to a string section in a symphony: the bass steel drums are a set of six full barrels played by one person; the cello drums are a set of three; double seconds are a set of two; and single lead drums play melodies while the others play bass lines and chord tones. The steel drum requires no previous musical training. In fact, it is very easy to learn. Students will gain hands-on experience in rhythm skills, ear training, and ensemble teamwork while learning and performing traditional calypso from Trinidad along with reggae, cha-cha, and pop music from the Beatles to No Doubt.
