Lieutenant Barbara Hammerman served the citizens of San Mateo
with distinction as a member of the San Mateo Police
Department for 21 years, holding numerous positions. She was
promoted to corporal in 1989, Sergeant in 1994, and Lieutenant
in 2001.
Her successes are legendary for her excellent work and for the
examples she set with her trailblazing efforts, championing
the rights and protection of the vulnerable in our society.
These are reflected in the numerous commendations and awards
she received. At-risk youth benefited greatly from her
volunteer work with the Police Activities League. Barbara
donated numerous hours as a PAL baseball coach and started a
youth kayaking program.
Her zeal was evident in her organizing of weekend biking and
kayaking trips for PAL youth. Barbara Hammerman lost her life
to cancer December 31, 2006 and is greatly missed.
